Powertrains and Capabilities

The 2021 Colorado is sold in four trims – Work Truck (WT), LT, Z71, and ZR2 – and a choice of cabs, a two-door extended cab or a four-door crew cab. The extended cab is only available with the long cargo bed, while the crew cab Colorado can be ordered with either the long or short cargo bed (except for the crew cab ZR2, which gets the short bed only). The ZR2 has standard four-wheel drive (4WD), but the other trims come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) standard and 4WD optional.

The base engine for the WT and LT trims in RWD configuration is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 200 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission. A 3.6-liter V-6 (with 305 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque) with an eight-speed automatic tranny is the standard powertrain for the Z71 and ZR2 as well as the two lower trims with 4WD; it’s optional on the WT and LT in RWD configuration. This engine is accompanied by an eight-speed automatic. A 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque is available for LT and higher trims with 4WD.

The EPA has estimated fuel economy at 16 mpg around town and 24 mpg for a V-6 Colorado (with 4WD) to 19 city/25 highway for the four-cylinder. The diesel engine can achieve fuel efficiency as high as 20 city/30 highway with RWD.

Standard and Optional Features

The Colorado WT comes with 16-inch wheels, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, vinyl flooring, power windows, a 3.5-inch monochrome drive information display, and a tilt steering wheel. Buyers can add the WT Convenience Package to get remote keyless entry, an anti-theft system, cruise control, and a remote locking EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate; the individual options include rear park assist and OnStar telematics. The LT gets the equipment from the WT Convenience Package and 17-inch wheels, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and a power driver’s seat. The available Luxury Package adds projector-style headlights, a heated steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar control, single-zone automatic climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The optional LT Convenience Package will add a rear window defogger, a rear sliding window, fog lamps, body-color heated power side mirrors, and remote start.

The Colorado Z71 gets the features of the LT’s Convenience and Luxury Packages as standard and adds some off-road elements: all-terrain tires, an off-road suspension, a locking rear differential, and hill descent control. It also has trim-specific upholstery and is eligible for some appearance packages, including the Midnight Edition option, which provides 17-inch black-painted wheels, 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires, a spray-on bedliner, all-weather floor liners, and a unique emblem package. The ZR2 adds to the Z71’s off-road capabilities with more standard trail-friendly equipment like a raised suspension with upgraded shocks, larger all-terrain tires, trim-specific front and rear bumpers, exclusive fender flares, a spray-in bedliner, and a locking rear differential.

Safety and Technology

Some of Chevrolet’s advanced driver aids can be added through the available Safety Package (for the LT trim and higher), which includes forward collision alert and lane departure warning. Rear park assist is available.

The WT gets a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. The screen increases to 8 inches for the LT and higher trims, and an upgrade to the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus System with navigation is available. That version includes a Bose seven-speaker premium audio system, a 4.2-inch color driver information display, HD radio, more USB data ports, an auxiliary input jack with SD card readers, and an upgraded rearview monitor.
