With the success of the Bolt EV, Chevrolet developed another electric offering with a little more size and utility and named it the Bolt EUV. This slightly larger battery-powered vehicle supplies greater range (around 250 miles) and the most updated technology, packaged within a more rugged crossover body. The big newsmaker is that it’s the first Chevrolet model to come with General Motors’ Super Cruise feature for partially hands-free driving. This semi-autonomous driving feature works in conjunction with adaptive cruise control on divided highways that don’t have traffic signals, intersections, or pedestrians. The sophisticated technology uses pinpoint GPS readings, high-definition mapping, and infrared monitoring of the driver (to detect drowsiness or other forms of inattention) to offer a semblance of self-driving. Super Cruise has been in use on the Cadillac CT6 since the 2018 model year, but its expansion to the more mainstream Chevy lineup is truly groundbreaking.

Trims, Powertrain, and Charging

The front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Bolt EUV comes in LT and Premier trim levels. It’s rated by the EPA to provide 247 miles of driving per charge (depending on weather and other conditions). It has a single 200-horsepower motor (which makes 266 pounds-feet of torque) and a 65-kWh lithium-ion battery. Chevy’s active thermal management technology keeps the battery pack at an optimal temperature during operation, which helps to ensure long battery life. All Bolt EUVs are supplied with a dual-level charge cord that can be used with either a level 1 (120-volt) or level 2 (240-volt) outlet. A half-hour of charging at a DC public fast-charger provides 95 miles of driving.

The EV Access Package is optional and gives Bolt EUV drivers additional capabilities such as real-time monitoring of the charge level, locating nearby charging stations, and setting up various notifications through the myChevrolet mobile app. Regen on Demand technology captures otherwise lost braking energy and send it to the battery for additional range; it’s activated by a paddle on the steering wheel. There’s also a button below the PRND selector to activate one-pedal driving, where the vehicle will brake when the driver’s foot leaves the accelerator, without need for the brake pedal.

Prominent Features by Trim Level

The LT is a nicely equipped base trim with features for utility (roof rails, a drive-mode selector, a 60/40-split rear seat, and a cargo area with a cover and hidden in-floor storage) and modern convenience (wireless phone charging, heated exterior mirrors with built-in turn-signal indicators, keyless entry, and remote start). Some other notable standard features are push-button start, LED headlights and daytime running lights, flat-bottom steering wheel, Regen on Demand paddle shifters, an 8-inch driver information center, automatic climate control, two USB charging ports (one Type-A and the other Type-C), and a 12V power outlet. The Premier trim’s upgrades include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome exterior accents, and perforated leather seats, which are heated and ventilated in the front row and heated in the back row.

Driver-Assist Technology

The LT is set up with lane keep assist and lane departure warning with a special safety signal for pedestrians. The Premier gets much more, with standard adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view monitor, lane-change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear parking sensors, and a rear seat reminder. The Teen Driver feature is standard on both trims. This innovative system lets parents and guardians keep tabs on beginner operators while helping them learn safe driving habits.

While GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving is the most innovative available technology in the Bolt EUV, the Driver Attention System that works along with it is impressively sophisticated as well. It uses infrared technology to monitor where the driver is looking – and even whether their eyes are closing from sleepiness. If the Driver Attention System finds that the driver isn’t concentrating on the road ahead, visual and audible alerts will jolt them to get their eyes back on the road. If the driver remains inattentive, the system will activate the hazard lights and safely bring the vehicle to a stop. While Super Cruise requires a subscription, Chevy includes a 3-year free trial.

The Chevy Safety Assist package is offered to add more commonplace driver-assist technologies such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane keeping assist. Other advanced features, like rear cross-traffic alert and a surround-view camera system, will also be optional.

Connectivity and Communication

Both the LT and Premier receive the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system, marked by a 10.2-inch HD touchscreen (it also operates by voice recognition). Its other must-have features are Bluetooth for hands-free phone and audio streaming, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an audio system with six speakers.
