Crossovers may be all the rage in automotive sales right now, but there will always be drivers who are more interested in style and performance than outright utility. The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro is here to please them with its retro muscle-car look, heightened performance, and appealing attitude. This iconic two-door comes in both coupe and convertible forms and has enticed adrenaline seekers for over five decades. The Camaro is a true-to-form American classic in every sense, pushing limits and giving its main rival, the Ford Mustang, a run for its money. Sure, practical vehicles are in vogue these days, but there’s something about a tried-and-true performance car – and the Camaro in particular – that stands out and commands attention in this SUV-centric world.

Trim Levels and Performance

Chevy’s 2022 Camaro is a rear-wheel-drive two-door that is made in eight trims: 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, LT1, 1SS, 2SS, and ZL1. The 1LS is only available as a coupe, but the 1LT and remaining trims can be ordered with a convertible soft top.

The 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 275 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT can be ordered with the available 3.6-liter V6 (335 hp and 284 lb.-ft. of torque), while the LT1, 1SS, and 2SS have a 6.2-liter V8 (455 hp and 455 lb.-ft. of torque). The top-of-the-line ZL1 is blessed with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that puts out 650 horses and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. All trims come with a standard six-speed manual transmission, but an eight-speed automatic is available for models with the 2.0-liter engine (excluding the 1LS), while the V6 and V8 models are eligible for a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Equipment by Trim Level

The most basic trim, the 1LS, has a power driver’s seat, selectable drive modes, automatic climate control, and 18-inch wheels. The 1LT adds a power front passenger’s seat, and the 2LT gets all of the above plus dual-zone automatic climate control. The 3LT receives a more diverse lineup of equipment that includes an 8-inch driver information center, a head-up display, a wireless phone charger, a rear camera mirror, position memory for the driver’s seat, and a heated steering wheel. The 3LT also has a few prominent driving aids (forward collision alert, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors).

The LT1 is equipped like the 1LT but also gets an external engine oil cooler, Brembo front brakes, and 20-inch wheels. Rear Brembo brakes are provided in the 1S, along with a rear spoiler, an extra capacity cooling system, and the 8-inch driver information center.

The 2SS gets the contents of the 3LT, in addition to the non-supercharged 6.2-liter V8. The ZL1 is set up with upgraded red-caliper Brembo brakes, summer performance tires (Goodyear Eagles), a performance-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, dual exhaust, a suede microfiber-wrapped sport steering wheel, and Recaro performance front seats. A sunroof can be ordered for every trim except the 1LS.

The 1LS gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The 1LT and 2LT have SiriusXM satellite radio, while the 3LT comes with an 8-inch touchscreen and a premium nine-speaker Bose audio system (there are just seven speakers in the convertible). The LT1 goes back to the 7-inch touchscreen, but the 8-inch unit is returned in the 1SS, 2SS, and ZL1. The 2SS and ZL1 are both eligible for a built-in navigation system.

Punch-Packing Packages

A handful of noteworthy packages are available for the ’22 Camaro. The SS trims can be beefed up with the SS Track Performance Package, which pairs black exterior accents with the contents of the ZL1 trim (minus the supercharged engine). The ZL1 can be ordered with the ZL1 1LE Extreme Track Performance Package, which provides low-gloss black side mirrors, 19-inch wheels with Goodyear Eagle summer tires, red brake calipers, a special front splitter, and a carbon-fiber hood insert and rear spoiler. The RS Package is optional for the LT trims (1LT, 2LT, 3LT, and LT1). It has powerful LED headlights, a black grille with chrome lower inserts, black front and rear bowtie emblems, darkened taillights, and exclusive RS badges.

Special Variants

The Redline Edition and Shock and Steel Special Edition appearance packages can be added to certain trim levels of the 2022 Camaro. The Redline Edition, which is available for all trims but the 1LS and ZL1, shows off 20-inch black-painted aluminum wheels with red accents, a black Camaro fender badge with a red outline, Redline Edition graphics, and a blacked-out interior with red seat belts and knee pads. The Shock and Steel Special Edition for the 2SS adds a center stripe with either yellow or silver accents, unique 20-inch blade-design wheels, black RS and SS badges, a black fuel door with a carbon-fiber insert, yellow brake calipers, and a carbon-fiber instrument panel.
