Overview

The Malibu name has been appearing on Chevrolets since 1964, evoking images of that exclusive coastal enclave’s celebrities and surfers in the sun. Back then, the nameplate was reserved for the higher-performance variant of the Chevelle, these days it stands for a combination of style and value. The Malibu became a distinct model in 1978 but went on hiatus in 1983, only to reemerge in 1997. Now, in its ninth generation, the Malibu stands out as the only remaining midsized sedan among domestic automakers. Among the changes for 2022 are a more streamlined trim lineup (the entry-level L has been dropped), some refreshed exterior colors, and more standard equipment, like aluminum wheels and an electronic parking brake.

Trims and Powertrain

For 2022, the Malibu is sold in four trims: LS, RS, LT, and Premier. Front-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, with all versions except the Premier getting a turbocharged 163-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission. The Premier gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 250 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and works with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The EPA’s official fuel economy estimates for trims with the base trim are 29 mpg around town and 36 mpg on the highway; the ratings for the Premier are 22 city/33 highway.

Standard Features

The LS, which was the second trim level before Chevy truncated the Malibu lineup, is nicely equipped with auto-on/off halogen headlamps, keyless entry, power-adjustable exterior mirrors, push-button start, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a 12V power outlet, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. The RS is a sporty upgrade with its black exterior accents, dual exhaust tips, 18-inch wheels, rear spoiler, eight-way power driver’s seat, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

The LT goes back to the same exterior styling as the LS but upgrades to 17-inch wheels and adds heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, LED taillights, heated power side mirrors, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and rear console vents. The available LT Leather Package will add leather seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a heated steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Some of the other options are a power sunroof and multiple appearance packages (Midnight, Redline, and Sport).

The Premier gets the contents of the LT Leather Package as standard along with a power sunroof, driver’s memory system, a power front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, an 8-inch color driver information display, ambient cabin lighting, wireless device charging, and 19-inch wheels.

Advanced Safety Technology

Buyers of each 2022 Malibu trim have the option to add driver-assist technologies via select packages. The Driver Confidence I Package is offered on the LS, RS, and LT to add lane change alert, side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear park assist. The Driver Confidence I & II Package also adds forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and following distance indicator. The Premium is eligible for the Enhanced Driver Confidence Package, containing all of the previously mentioned technologies plus enhanced automatic emergency braking, automatic parking assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Infotainment and Optional Packages

The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system has an 8-inch color touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity for phone use and audio streaming, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, dual front USB ports, and a sound system with six speakers. OnStar and Chevrolet Connected Services are also standard. The Premier moves up to a high-end Bose setup with nine speakers and adds navigation. Wi-Fi hotspot access is optional across the lineup.
