Chevy’s cost-conscious Spark has somewhat of an unconventional history. It was developed in 1998 by the Korean manufacturing group Daewoo, which named it Matiz, and its subcompact size made it popular with European consumers. General Motors bought out the struggling Daewoo in 2002. Once the reorganization was finalized, GM promptly changed the hatchback’s name from Matiz to Spark and marketed it under their Chevrolet brand. In this age of the crossover, the Spark remains one of only two traditional car choices in Chevy’s 2022 lineup, along with the Malibu sedan. The compact and inexpensive hatchback not only returns excellent fuel economy but is also easy to drive in densely populated urban environments. Plus, it’s well equipped with standard features and comes in a palette of 10 vibrant paint colors for those looking to express their personality.

Trims and Performance

Chevy’s 2022 Spark is a small, front-wheel drive hatchback sold in four trim levels: LS, 1LT, Activ, and 2LT. The powerplant in each is a 1.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 98 hp and is paired to either a standard five-speed manual gearbox or an available continuously variable transmission (CVT). Efficiency is high on the list of the Spark’s strong points, as most CVT models return an EPA-estimated 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway (the Activ achieves almost the same: 30 city/37 highway with the CVT). If you choose the manual transmission, you’ll get 29 city/38 highway from the LS, 1LT, and 2LT, while the manual Activ’s highway mpg dips ever so slightly to 37.

Amenities of Note

The entry-level LS gets mainly the essentials, like cloth seats, two USB data ports, and a 12-volt power outlet. The 1LT adds heated power side mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and power windows and door locks. The Activ is enhanced with a slightly raised suspension, fog lights, an exclusive grille design, unique black bumpers, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and synthetic leather upholstery, while the 2LT adds LED daytime running lights, chrome exterior trim, and an upgraded driver information display. A sunroof is optional for the 1LT and 2LT. The Spark’s hatchback design yields some versatile cargo space. If the 60/40 split rear seatback is up, the cargo area yields 11.1 cubic feet of space. When it’s folded, cargo volume increases to 27.2 cu. ft.

Advanced Safety Technology

Every trim comes with a full arrangement of airbags, but if you want to take the ’22 Spark’s safety to the next level, you can add the optional Driver Confidence Package to the 2LT. It provides forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. Even without the package, the 2LT has standard rear park assist, a system that alerts you of objects behind your vehicle to help make parking easier. OnStar communications services are also standard across the board to provide emergency assistance in the event of a collision.

Infotainment and Connectivity

To keep the Spark’s occupants connected, every trim gets the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with a 7-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. A four-speaker sound system is standard on the LS, but the other trims are upgraded with a six-speaker system.
