Overview

It’s an exciting year for the GMC Sierra 1500, which is back for the 2022 model year with a major refresh, even though it was redesigned a mere three years ago. The highlights are a fully revamped interior with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, plus two all-new trim levels, AT4X and Denali Ultimate. The AT4X will take the existing AT4’s brawn a notch up with even more exceptional off-road performance, thanks to an enhanced suspension and other super-rugged components. Those looking for all possible luxury will be interested in the Denali Ultimate, marked by premium features usually reserved for high-end sedans. On the hi-tech front, General Motors’ innovative Super Cruise hands-free driving technology will be offered in the Sierra for the first time.

Trims, Configurations, and Powertrains

With numerous trims, cab styles, cargo box length, and powertrains, it’s hard to count all the ways you can configure a 2022 Sierra 1500. It starts with eight trims – Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate – and three cab styles: regular (two doors), double (two standard front doors and two smaller rear doors), and crew (four standard doors). The regular cab with the long cargo bed is only available with the Pro trim, and the double cab with the standard box can be ordered with the Pro, SLE, or Elevation trim. All trims except the Pro can be built with the crew cab and a choice of either the short or standard cargo box. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard on the Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, and Denali. Four-wheel drive (4WD) is standard with the AT4, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate and available on the other trims.

The standard powertrain for the Pro, SLE, and Elevation is a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine (making 310 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque) with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 5.3-liter V8 producing 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque is standard with the SLT and Denali and available on the Pro, SLE, and Elevation. The base engine for the AT4 is a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder Diesel making 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque (this powerplant is available with all other trims except the Pro). Offering 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, a 6.2-liter V8 gas-powered engine is standard on the AT4X and Denali Ultimate and optional on the SLT, AT4, and Denali. All of these upgraded powerplants team up with a ten-speed automatic.

For the 5.3-liter V8, fuel usage is 14 to 16 mpg around town and 17 to 21 mpg on the highway. That changes to 13 to 15 city/17 to 20 highway for the 6.2-liter V8. For a 2022 Sierra with Diesel power, fuel economy estimates are 20 to 23 city/18 to 22 highway.

Standard Features

The primary equipment for the work-focused Sierra Pro includes LED exterior lighting, a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat with covered armrest storage, a manual tilt steering column, single-zone manual/semi-automatic climate control, and 17-inch steel wheels. The six-function MultiPro tailgate is one of the available upgrades for the Pro. The SLE adds the MultiPro tailgate as standard along with the trailering package. Some of its other standard features include deep-tinted glass, heated power side mirrors, keyless entry and start, remote start, a ten-way power driver’s seat with lumbar control, dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a heated driver’s seat and front outboard passenger seat (subject to availability). The Elevation adds 20-inch gloss black aluminum wheels, blacked-out exterior trim, and LED fog lights.

Things start to get more upscale at the SLT level. This trim gets chrome exterior trim, unique 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, power-folding heated side mirrors, an upgraded trailering system, leather upholstery, a ten-way power front passenger seat, and a driver’s memory system. The AT4 offers a blend of comfort and extra ruggedness with all-terrain tires, a traction control system with an off-road feature, hill descent control, an upgraded suspension with a 2-inch lift, skid plates, recovery hooks, a spray-on bedliner, leather upholstery with perforated front seating, and heated and cooled front bucket seats. The plush Denali adds 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, an adaptive suspension, a power-sliding rear window, side steps, heated second-row seats, and advanced driver aids (more information is provided below).

The AT4X takes the AT4’s attributes a step further with an even more capable suspension, a two-speed transfer case, front and rear electronic locking differentials, a full-grain leather interior, real wood interior trim, a 15-inch head-up display, and 16-way power front seats with a massaging function. The Denali Ultimate incorporates full-grain leather upholstery with matching leather trim on the door panels, instrument panel, and console lid. Its other premium features include open-pore wood trim, a 15-inch head-up display, 16-way power front seats with massage, a rearview mirror camera display, and a power sunroof.

Advanced Safety Technologies

Various driver-assist technologies are either available or standard on the 2022 Sierra, depending on the trim level. Some examples are forward-collision alert, automatic emergency braking with front pedestrian detection, a trailer hitch monitor, lane-change alert with side blind-zone alert, and automatic high beams. All Sierras get GM’s Teen Driver technology, which monitors new drivers’ habits and records data (such as speed) in report form for parents to use in guiding teens to develop better on-road practices. The state-of-the-art Super Cruise hands-free technology will be included with the Denali Ultimate and available on the Denali and be trailering capable.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The base infotainment system found on the Pro and SLE includes a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, USB data ports with auxiliary input, and telematics for emergency help and vehicle diagnostics. SiriusXM satellite radio and access to OnStar/GMC Connected Services/Wi-Fi hotspot are available with the Pro and standard on higher trims. The SLT and higher trims get an 8-inch touchscreen as standard; navigation and a seven-speaker Bose sound system are available on SLT, Elevation, AT4, and AT4X and standard on the Denali and Denali Ultimate.
